The Gap State School

Music

Music

Music is an integral part of life at The Gap State School, involving students, staff and parents. The aim of the music program is to develop the creativity which is present in varying degrees in all children. Music programs focus on students making music and developing the ability to think and express themselves in sound.

Learning is activity based and through a variety of such activities the children are taught the basic skills of music - beat, rhythm, pitch, singing, movement, listening, musical literacy, creating and playing. Great emphasis is placed on the "enjoyment" aspect.

Students from prep to Year 5 receive twice weekly music lessons from a music specialist teacher and students in Year 6 and 7 receive a lesson once a week. The music room has 19 keyboards for classroom use plus 4 computers to access music software.

Instrumental and choral programs on offer to students

Auditions are held at the end of each year for students who wish to become a member of one of our school choirs. We currently have five choirs: Senior (generally Years 6 & 7); Junior (generally Years 4 & 5); Chamber (a small group of auditioned singers); Sopranino (usually convenes in Semester 2, with membership open to all Year 2 and 3 students) and a Community Choir (for parents, staff, past students and community members) .

All students undertake a selection process in Year 2 to determine their aptitude for playing a string instrument (violin or cello). Following this process, offers to join the instrumental program are made to selected students. In Year 4, a further selection process is undertaken to identify students who have an aptitude and desire to learn a band instrument (woodwind, brass or percussion). Department funding provides selected children with one small group lesson per week and access to our loan instruments for a year.

Strings:
Violin, Cello, Double Bass (limited availability from Year 4)
Band:

Woodwind: Flute, Clarinet, Saxophone
Brass: Trumpet, Trombone, Tuba, French Horn, Euphonium
Percussion (all percussion students play a variety of tuned and untuned instruments)

All groups participate in competitive as well as non-competitive events during the year.

It is well-known that children who participate in music programs demonstrate a significant improvement in their scholastic endeavours.
