Striving for Success

The Gap State School is proud of its heritage of success. Since its establishment in 1912, the school has retained its distinctive traditions but has also been at the forefront of much that has been new in education, forging a reputation of quality that remains in tact to this day.

Striving for Success is more than a motto that sits on our school badge and adorns students’ shirts. It is a phrase that provides a focus for all that we do in our school:

  • the programs we develop and implement
  • the processes we enact
  • the care and support we provide for our students
  • the environment in which we work and learn
  • our commitment to being an integral part of the broader community.

Striving for Success provides an impetus that binds our community together as we seek collaborative responses to the issues of the day and the new initiatives in education.

We at The Gap State School continue to look toward the future in a positive manner. It will be full of wonderful opportunities and challenges that will enrich the lives of all. As we continue to strive for success we will continue to provide the best in educational service for our children.

A Brief History
The Gap School

The original Gap State School was opened officially on January 22, 1912 on the corner of the present Waterworks and School Roads. By May of that year 21 children were enrolled. Commensurate with demographic growth in The Gap, student numbers increased, and from 1960 overcrowding was so severe that a new school was urgently required. It was built on its present site and opened on January 23, 1961. It had a teaching staff of seven and very quickly 285 children were enrolled. By the mid 1970s numbers of students had increased to an incredible 1150.

Many other changes occurred. The school swimming pool was opened in 1968. The school library, presently housing approximately 40 000 resources, was completed in 1974. Netball courts and a tennis court were installed. The school Dental Clinic was opened in 1979.

The School, which celebrated its 75th Jubilee in 1987, has always endeavoured to offer quality education and as in the 1980s, has remained a vital and incredibly busy school which offers its students educational opportunities of a high standard. We are planning for our Centenary in 2012!
